So who’s up for a tattoo this weekend? I say that with a huge smile on my face, not because I’m getting a tattoo but because it will be an item of more discussion than eating clean or reaching one’s exercise goals.

Tattoos have become more popular over the past decade and as a practitioner who looks at backs (and necks, arms, legs, you get the point); I see many more of them today than I did 18 years ago when I started my practice. Can you believe in the included article that 40% if millennials have tattoos?

To better understand that tattoos and their effects are more than skin deep, I suggest educating yourself a bit more on what’s actually in the ink that will stay in, not on, your skin before you commit to this process.

As this article states, that the inks

“– include molecules from preservatives and contaminants such as nickel, chromium, manganese, and cobalt, researchers reported in the peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports.”

If you look at any of those additives and their effects, you will find toxic side effects which can compromise your body’s immune system. And unlike the circulatory system which is a closed system, the lymphatic system carries and filters extra fluids that support not only the circulatory system (heart) but also your immune system. In short, this means that these contaminants can end up in organs like your lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus.

So before your next tattoo, ask yourself is it worth the possible immune compromise. Sorry, I’m not trying to destroy anyone’s artistic flare, but rather trying to promote a healthy lifestyle!
